What is the take-back obligation for old electrical appliances?

Buying a new electrical appliance? Thanks to the take-back obligation, you can return your old appliance to the retailer free of charge. But when does this obligation apply, and are there any exceptions? We explain everything you need to know.

When does the take-back obligation apply?

Buying a new electrical or electronic appliance, or a lamp? The retailer is required to take back your old, similar appliance free of charge. This applies both in-store and to online purchases.

Your old appliance does not have to have been bought from the same retailer, and it can be a different brand.

Which appliances are covered by the take-back obligation?

The take-back obligation applies to electrical and electronic appliances, as well as lamps. This includes, for example*:

  • refrigerators and freezers
  • washing machines and tumble dryers
  • televisions and screens
  • laptops and computers
  • mobile phones and tablets
  • vacuum cleaners
  • kitchen appliances, such as mixers, coffee machines and microwave ovens
  • lamps
