First sort, then pack
Moving means emptying cupboards, filling boxes and deciding what will and won’t come with you to your new home. It’s the perfect time to sort out the electrical devices you no longer use.
That mixer that’s been sitting at the back of a cupboard for years? An old lamp in the attic? Or a drawer full of cables no one remembers the purpose of? Sort them out before you move. That way, you’ll have less to carry and give your unused devices a new life.
What should you do with electrical devices that aren’t moving with you?
Not every device you no longer need is automatically waste. Does it still work? Someone else might still be able to use it. Could it be repaired? Or is it really beyond repair? In that case, its materials and raw materials can be recycled.
Not sure what the best option is? Search for your device and enter your location. Our tool will help you find the right solution.
A few tips
Start sorting in good time
Don’t wait until the moving van is at the door. Go through your belongings room by room beforehand and decide what is coming with you and what isn’t.
For electricals, ask yourself those three questions:
- ✅ Does the device still work? Pass it on to family or friends, sell it second-hand or take it to a reuse center.
- 🪛 Can it still be repaired? Check whether a repair could extend its life.
- ❌ Is it really beyond repair? Take it to a Recupel point so the materials can be recycled as much as possible.
That way, you avoid moving boxes full of unused electrical devices from one cupboard to another.
A new appliance for your new home?
Moving can also be the perfect time for a new fridge, washing machine or another electrical appliance. But what should you do with the old one?
Buying a new, similar, appliance? You can hand your old appliance over to the retailer free of charge. A solution must also be provided to take back your old appliance when you buy online or have it delivered to your home. Read more about the take-back obligation.
Don’t forget your drawers and cupboards
Large appliances are easy to spot. But when moving, you’ll often come across plenty of small electrical devices that have been out of sight for years. Think of:
- old chargers and cables
- power strips and extension leads
- small kitchen appliances
- lamps
- other small electrical or electronic devices
No longer using them and are they not suitable for reuse or repair? Collect them separately and take them to a Recupel point.
